Acupressure: Find Your Flow

Are there any tips or techniques someone can remember when providing treatment? Admittedly, many people are unsure of what acupressure is, and sometimes people may confuse it with acupuncture. The two developed techniques may be similar, however there are equally considerable differences.  

 

Let us focus on acupressure and why it is so beneficial for people.

 

What is the history behind it?

 

Acupressure  is a  form of treatment that has a long and rich history. It has been assumed that acupressure has been around since approximately 1700 BCE, making it one of the oldest forms of documented Chinese Medicine. Traditionally, it is believed that acupressure helps rebalance one’s chi (also spelled qi) by stimulating various pressure points throughout the body and helping restore the energy flow through a person’s meridians or channels. So think of your energy as a river.

 

What is Acupressure and how does it work? 

 

Acupressure is traditionally based on the concept where your energy flows through meridians or channels throughout your body. Unlike acupuncture, accupressure does not  involve needle insertion.  Acupuncture uses firm pressure on any of the typical humans' natural points according to your symptoms. According to Medical News Today, “ Applying firm pressure to the hand valley point can typically reduce stress, stop migraines, and prevent the possible pain in the: shoulders, teeth, and neck." 

 

An essential thing that you need to remember when practicing acupressure (whether it be on yourself or a client), is that you will need to maintain a constant firm pressure to massage the pressure point deeply (s). While you need to maintain deep and constant pressure, ensure that you are not hurting yourself or the person that is receiving the treatment.  While you should channel your strength through your fingertips, do not push the person past what pressure they are comfortable with. A factor (which may sound obvious) to remember when administering acupressure is that the patient should be relaxed and not tensed up. Acupressure will be more effective if the person receiving it is calmer and in a deeper state of relaxation. 

 

A therapist (like ones trained through our Acupressure & Meridian Therapy Program)  can help their client achieve relaxation by having them take a deep breath in through the nose, hold it for a few seconds, and then breathe out slowly through the mouth. Repeat this as needed, because relaxation is key in making this treatment successful and beneficial. The last tip is to believe in what you are doing. Generally speaking, if you believe what you are doing, you will do better, or in this case, you will heal better. If you have a positive mindset when giving treatment, the energy will channel outwards positively. The positives of giving and receiving acupressure will always outweigh the negatives.
