Year One

Advanced Professional Massage Therapy Diploma Program - Year 1 


Program Duration: 1200 hours 

Year 1 of our Advanced Professional Massage Therapy Diploma Program is the first step towards becoming a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT). Once you complete your first year, you will be given a transcript and completion certificate to become eligible for a student membership with a massage association in Alberta to practice massage therapy as a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT)-in-training. You can also take the skills and techniques from these 1200 hours and apply them to different holistic fields.

Massage therapy training can be applied to these different holistic careers:
  • Chiropractor 
  • Physiotherapist 
  • Acupuncturist 
  • Naturopathic doctor
  • Reflexologist

Required Courses for Year 1 (740 hours)

  • Assessment/Ethics (250 hrs) 

​Introduction to massage therapy theory concepts and their applications to real-life therapeutic environments. Students examine client behavior and the therapist's ethical and social boundaries and behavior.

  • Massage Modalities (120 hrs) 

​Familiarization with central concepts in seated chair therapy, relaxation massage and therapeutic massage. Techniques and strategies pertaining to both relaxation and therapeutic massage will be learned. Students will be able to successfully go into their practicum with the knowledge and theory of all 3 of these modalities. 

  • Some of the relaxation techniques include: 
    • Stretching
    • Anxiety management 
    • Stress relief 
    • Soft touch massage
  • Some of the therapeutic techniques include:
    • Circulatory enhancement 
    • Neuromuscular techniques 
    • Trigger point techniques 
    • Deep tissue massage
  • Some of the seated chair techniques include:
    • Proper use of the seated chair 
    • Seated chair routine 
    • Hygiene of the chair 
    • Fully clothed massage techniques 
  • Breast & Lymphatic Drainage Massage (60 hrs) 

​Techniques pertaining to timing, pressure and direction to increase blood flow and lymphatic drainage to release stress on the body. Through improved flow techniques, students will be able to successfully aid in various lymphatic related issues.

  • Anatomy & Physiology (310 hrs)

Basic understanding of the body and its relationship to all inner structures and related pathology involved in the structural and functional changes the body goes through.

Case Studies (150 hours)

  • Relaxation Massage (25 hrs)
  • Therapeutic Massage (25 hrs)
  • Assessment (25 hrs)
  • Breast Massage (25 hrs)
  • Lymphatic Drainage Massage (25 hrs)
  • Seated Chair Massage (25hrs)

Case studies are designed to prepare students with valuable hands on, real-life situations and assessment experience. You may take your practical exam once all case studies are completed.

Examinations and Practical Exams (10 hours)

  • Practical Exam - 5 Exams @ 1.5 hrs each (7.5 hrs) ​
    Upon completion of each course, students will conduct a practical exam on their instructor, to demonstrate technique and knowledge.
     
  • Written Exam - 1 Exam @ 2.5 hrs ​
    This written, open book exam compromises all material covered in all modules and assignments, including class discussions.

Practicum (300 hrs) 

​Practicum consists over a period of 12 weeks with a requirement of 25 hours per week.

Students will practice a number of massage related activities including:
  • Different hands-on massage modalities learned throughout the term, such as: relaxation massage, therapeutic massage, seated chair massage, breast massage, and lymphatic drainage massage. 
  • Theory and operations involved in massage therapy learned throughout the term 
  • Professionalism 
  • Ethical conduct 

Students must complete all the classes and work associated with Year 1 before moving onto: 

Year 2 of our Advanced Professional Massage Therapy Diploma Program.
